光隆寺（こうりゅうじ）は1935年、横川一丁目から現在地に移され、このときにクスノキが植えられました。その10年後に原爆が投下され、爆風によって本堂は一瞬のうちに倒壊し、火災で境内の建物は全焼。クスノキも焼けてしまいました。幹は燃え尽きながらも、残った根元から芽吹いた3本のヒコバエが、ぐんぐん伸びて大きく育ちました。3本が支え合うように生きている被爆樹木です。

Kōryū-ji Temple relocated from Yokogawa 1-chome to its current location in 1935: it was at this time that they planted this camphor tree. Ten years later, the atomic bomb would destroy the temple building in an instant and the buildings in the temple grounds would be completely lost to fires. The camphor tree too would suffer burns. Despite the trunk being consumed by flames, the roots underground still lived, and from them, three new buds grew. These buds would continue to grow, quickly stretching their limbs to become the unique hibaku tree that you see today: three trunks from the same roots that support one another.
