Plane Tree

The plane trees which stand in the schoolyard of Tenma Elementary School were planted to commemorate the 1931 graduating class; the four trees that survived the bombing were replanted in their current position after the war. One of these trees was planted slightly farther from the rest. As they were replanted from where they originally sustained damages, the scars on the trees are facing different directions. The plane tree, including those badly burned by the intense heat with gaping holes in the trunks, became the symbol of the elementary school and remain well taken care of. When the bomb fell, all of the school buildings were destroyed, and hundreds of students, along with faculty members, lost their lives.
