天満小学校の道路沿いの歩道に、どっしりと立つクスノキは、この場所で被爆しました。この木のほかにも数本のクスノキが、原爆に耐えて再生しましたが、河川改修に伴って伐採され、この1本が残されました。幹は爆心地の方向に傾き、かつては空洞がありましたが、今では目立たなくなっています。歩道でひときわ目をひく、アイストップになっている大きなクスノキは、行き交う人々を見守っています。
The camphor tree that stands squarely along the road to Tenma Elementary School survived the bombing in this very spot. There were other camphor trees that survived, however, due to riverside maintenance and revamps, only this tree was spared from being cut down. While there used to be a hollow on the side of the trunk facing the hypocenter, it has since become less noticeable. This camphor tree is now an iconic landmark that watches over the community as they go about their lives on the busy street.
