Kurogane Holly

The holly tree on the grounds of the Rai Sanyō Memorial Museum is the second closest tree to the hypocenter to survive. It is said that the tree was spared from the fires of the bombing as it was behind the strong, stone building that is the Former Hiroshima Branch of the Bank of Japan. The trunk was bent and though much of it withered and the tree hollowed, new shoots grew from the roots to become the tree you see here today. The residence where Edo period historian Rai Sanyō drafted Nihon Gaishi, designated a national historic site, was lost to the fires of the bombing, but was restored in 1958, with the holly tree standing nearby.
