This A-Bombed Tree is the closest to the hypocenter.

There’s a weeping willow that blows in the wind on the road alongside the river
that runs toward the Hiroshima Peace Memorial (A-Bomb Dome).
“Come on over,” its green leafy fingers seem to wave you closer.
You approach and there’s a plate attached to its trunk.
In Japanese it says, “This A-Bombed Tree is the closest to the hypocenter.”

8:15 am, August 6, 1945.
The tree, just 370 m from the blast center, vanished branch and trunk in an instant.
Just its roots survived, miraculously.
Eventually, young shoots called suckers grew from the roots and the rejuvenated weeping willow
brought green life back to the burnt ruins.
In the 73 years since, the tree was nearly blown down by a typhoon as well, but its roots held fast,
and with support for its trunk, it has lived on.
The closest A-Bombed Tree to the blast center has watched the flow of the river,
the passage of time and the stream of people coming and going. Why not come and see it?
