70年間は草木も生えないだろう。その言葉がすべてを物語るように、70年前の8月6日午前8時15分、一瞬で消えた広島の街。 “Nothing will grow there for 70 years.” Those words seemed to say it all in that moment, at 8:15 am on August 6, seventy years ago, when Hiroshima suddenly disappeared.

けれど、生きる力までは、根こそぎ奪われてはいませんでした。 But the will to live would not be taken root and all.

70年の月日の中では、枯れた木もありました。伐られた木もありました。「このままでは忘れられてしまう」「広島に希望の木があることを伝えよう」。いつしか人々のこころに芽生えた想いは、被爆樹木を守る活動になり、種から育った二世、三世が世界へ旅立っています。 In the passage of 70 years, some of the tree’s brethren have withered. Some have been felled. Over time, the people of Hiroshima started realizing that they would be forgotten if something wasn’t done, and determined to tell the world about their city’s trees of hope. The idea that budded in their hearts became a movement to protect the A-bombed trees. Today, a second and third generation of saplings grown from their seeds has been sent out into the world.

今、被爆樹木として広島市に登録されているのは約170本。一本一本の名前と再生の物語を伝える、新しい標識もできました。空に向かって手をふるように、緑の葉をゆらしながら、いのちをつなぎ、こころをつなぐ。被爆樹木に息づく広島の記憶と希望は、これからも生きつづけます。 Hiroshima today has around 170 registered A-Bombed Trees.Each now also has a new plaque that tells its name and the story of its regeneration.They connect lives and hearts as they wave their green leafy hands to the skies above.The memories and hopes of Hiroshima that breathe within the A-Bombed Trees will live on.

※広島市では、爆心地から概ね2km以内で被爆し、再び芽吹いた約170本の木々を「被爆樹木」として登録しています。

Hiroshima City has registered around 170 trees that were exposed to radiation within approx.
2 km of the blast hypocenter and went on to bud again as A-Bombed Trees.
